Week 0 - Step 2

As instructed, here are 3 images and some details about them...

IMAGE A: Personal Creative Work: 'New Leaf Apartments' - Terrence Feng

The New Leaf Apartments was completed for my Major Design Project when studying Design and Technology during high school. The design brief was to design a solution to an existing problem in reality. My focus was to explore the viability of green wall technologies to offset the removal of natural landscapes upon creation of high rise apartments for a growing population. The model itself was constructed using laser cut screenboard, boxboard, acetate, arts and craft greenery and plywood. Construction of this model took a month of long after-hour sessions at school and many sleepless nights.

IMAGE B: A Great Piece of Architecture: 'Falling Water' - Frank Lloyd Wright

Falling Water is a residential house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1935. It is located in the south-western mountains of Pennsylvania. The house uses native sandstone among other local construction materials to emphasise a connection with the forest landscape. The iconic angle shown in the photograph also highlights the design choice of its proximity to the river of which is accessible via a small pontoon below the main cantilevered balcony/living space. Today, Falling Water is a public museum space - accessible for all to experience this architectural marvel.

IMAGE C: An Original Photograph of Something Beautiful: 'Behind the Waterfall'

This is a photograph taken from my mobile phone in a small cave behind a waterfall in China. The silhouette of the boy to the left side of the waterfall opening blends rather nicely into the shadows. This, alongside how he is also looking out through the waterfall to the greenery and temples outside presents a sense of disconnection with his Chinese tradition and culture. Disconnection is focused as part of the identity of the boy - being born Chinese but raised in a foreign land. This photograph does not only expresses this interesting story but also reflects the beauty of rediscovering culture despite the challenges that awaits.
