THE ARCHITECTURE - PROJECT 2 SUBMISSION

Here is the final model of my Light Rail station which has been developed over these past few weeks.
Note: The upper level is for arrivals from Central station and the lower level is departure for Central station. This allows for more effective travelling to and from uni: People arriving conveniently walk down stairs and people lining up to head home have adequate space around the Roundhouse to wait.

A FEW LUMION RENDERS:

1. 'Social Connectivity: Architecture as a Stage' - Studio Gang

A 'stage' like atmosphere is created from the curved element covering over the main platform of which is reminiscent of Studio Gang's architectural style. Their architecture is often perceived as being awe inspiring and follows curved geometries.

2. 'Repetition of Geometry' - Mies Van Der Rohe

The facades of the upper platform follow a style inspired by Mies Van Der Rohe's Farnsworth House. The repetition of metal supports encasing glass reflects the simple yet effective approach employed in his architecture. "Less is more!"

3. 'Light'

The 'light' texture from the 'Materiality' series (refer to post on 36 Textures) was used on the main curving shade. This is used to emphasise both an 'airy' feeling to the structure and to reflect the vast development of Technology as seemingly impossible structures begin to enter reality.

4. 'Medium'

The 'medium' texture from the 'Simplicity Through Form and Shape' series was used as the main connecting path from the station to the Roundhouse path (to the left).

5. 'Shadow'

The darkest texture of the 'Materiality' series was used for the main core/structural element of the light rail station. It creates a heavy contrast to the lighter elements (meaning both physically and aesthetically light).

Below are a few bonus scenes from my Lumion file!

Technology is becoming an increasingly popular medium for the interaction between people and information. Transportation, materiality and construction approaches are also, in a broad sense, technologies. It is important to recognise that these overlooked aspects of our built environment are all derived from technological development.

36 CUSTOM TEXTURES - PROJECT 2 SUBMISSION

Here are 36 textures (6 textures each per concept) that focus on ideas of Light and Shadow.

18 SKETCH AXONOMETRICS - PROJECT 2 SUBMISSION

Here I've compiled the 18 axonometric sketches that were inspired by the concept statements our class came up with. There are 3 extra axonometrics from when I had to create curved profiles.

2 CONCEPTS - PROJECT 2 SUBMISSION

To make things easier, I've compiled everything into a series of posts relating to the final submission of Project 2: The Space Between. This post focuses on the two concepts and their relationship to my chosen theme of technology.

THE THEME: TECHNOLOGY

- SOCIAL CONNECTIVITY: ARCHITECTURE AS A STAGE (Studio Gang)

Without technological advancements in super materials such as aerogels and improving the effectiveness of common techniques such as steel reinforcing of concrete, such organic forms cannot exist. In an attempt to create the 'stage-like' atmosphere of the overhang, manufacturing technologies were pushed to the limit.

- PRISM BASED GEOMETRIES AND REPETITION OF SHAPE (Mies Van Der Rohe)

It is through repetition and experimentation that expands the capabilities of technologies, and to discover innovation with current ones. Mies Van Der Rohe's style often follows simple horizontal and vertical geometries in repeating form. With the aid of technology, such designs exist in seemingly lightweight and efficient representations.
It should also be noted, technological code itself is a repetition of ones and zeros.

PRELIMINARY MODELLING OF STATION

I took one of the curved axonometric sketches and recreated it in SketchUp. I was then able to use downloadable extensions to generate the organic/freeform shape I had sketched on pen and paper.

ORIGINAL SKETCH (SOCIAL CONNECTIVITY + REPETITION)

SKETCHUP RECREATION

This SketchUp recreation is far more pleasing than my simple reduction of rectangular prisms to elliptical prisms.

From there I proceeded to import the station model into a recreated model of UNSW's lower campus. The original layout and size of the station was not aesthetic or functional so I rotated the form into a more suitable position and scaled the main supports to be clear of the main road (Anzac Parade).

From here it would be best to develop some circulation points for people flow and to refine how the light rail itself would interact with the upper portion.

MORE AXONOMETRICS AND CURVILINEAR TRANSFORMATIONS

In class we combined the original axo sketches in pairs and made compound forms. These forms were sketched from the front and back. Then, some components were given curved forms.

COMBINING 'RENEWABLE' & 'LESS IS MORE'

COMBINING 'ADAPTABILITY' & 'INTERIOR/EXTERIOR BARRIERS'

COMBINING 'SOCIAL' & 'REPETITION'

CURVILINEAR RECREATIONS

For some of the curved recreations, I attempted to add some extra lines to highlight the curved geometry that would had been otherwise easily misunderstood. I think it was relatively successful but could have been done better!

SKETCHUP AND LUMION

I took the 'Renewable' concept into SketchUp and imported it into Lumion. The results are as shown:

12 AXONOMETRIC SKETCHES

12 axonometric sketches were made revolving around concepts derived from the works of Studio Gang and Mies Van Der Rohe.
Note each sketch has a front and back view.

STUDIO GANG:
ADAPTABILITY: FORMING NEW STRUCTURE OVER ALREADY FUNCTIONAL ONES.

 RENEWABLE: MINIMAL ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

SOCIAL CONNECTIVITY: ARCHITECTURE AS A STAGE
